"We designed our mix of itineraries to take advantage of New York's geographic flexibility, so that you can soak up the springtime sun in the Caribbean, head to Bermuda over the summer, or go north to see Canada's natural beauty in the fall." MSC has long talked about its expansion plans in the North American cruise market, especially as it relates to brining more international travelers into the U.S. The rapidly expanding cruise line has been sending its newest ships to Florida ports, most recently MSC Seashore, based year-round in Miami. To learn more about MSC Cruises’ itineraries and experience on board its ships, click here. The cruise line aims to bring more international cruisers to the US market, and it’s not short of cruise ships!

The arrival of the ship marks the first time MSC Cruises has deployed a ship in New York operating year-round sailings. Even at the world’s cruise capital at PortMiami, the cruise line is constructing the most advanced cruise terminal in North America, which will accommodate three of the line’s largest cruise ships simultaneously. New York offers incredible flight connections for international guests and for those that want to make the most of the Big Apple, MSC Cruises offers “Stay & Cruise” packages with an option to stay up to three nights in New York City prior to setting sail. A selection of hotel options is available including the Hotel Riu Plaza Manhattan, Hotel Riu Plaza Times Square and the Park Central Hotel. As part of the package guests can enjoy a complimentary guided tour through Manhattan and its landmarks prior to embarking on the ship.

Since 2017, seven innovative cruise ships have joined the fleet, including two in 2021 and a further two this year. Frequent New York-area cruisers are already well used to the cruise terminals in Manhattan and across the river in New Jersey, at Cape Liberty. Until now, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook was primarily the domain of Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and Princess sailings, as well as smaller international ships. MSC Meraviglia's Canada & New England sailings are possibly the most diverse. These cruises will last either 10 or 11 nights in duration, and will feature calls on a number of ports, including Boston, Portland (Maine), Charlottetown, PEI; Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick -- home to the incredible tides at the Bay of Fundy. MSC Meraviglia's 11-night sailings offer an additional port stop in Newport, Rhode Island.

However, passengers embarking MSC Meraviglia in the short term should be patient with the hardworking crew, who are doing their best despite being obviously understaffed. Bars are a particular pinch-point, and drink service can take a decent amount of time for orders to be fulfilled. Festivities surrounded the ship's arrival at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook. But Cruise Critic went deeper and recently sailed aboard MSC Meraviglia in the Caribbean to catch up withe the ship in advance of its New York redeployment. Here's what cruisers should know about MSC Meravllia's New York sailings.

A US$650,000 federal grant was given to the city for the building of a new ferry terminal. The facility is on the southern part of the Military Ocean Terminal, on an artificial peninsula east of NJ Route 440. The company "Port Authority of New York and New Jersey" was established in 1921 to manage all facilities and services within the combined NY-NJ harbor area. The company also controls all vehicular and rapid-transit systems connecting New York and New Jersey, several airports, as well as real estate developments. Cape Liberty Cruise Port is also in New York Harbor but is part of Bayonne City (New Jersey).

MSC Cruises has welcomed the MSC Seascape to its fleet as its 21st ship with the line’s newest ship officially named at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City on Wednesday evening. Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is home to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Program, which aims to develop and refine methods to reverse the decline in coral reefs. By annual cargo capacity, the seaport is ranked USA's 3rd largest - after South Louisiana (Mississippi River) and Houston (Texas). DW now reminds me that the last time we parked (we have done this several times) they no longer collected the fee in advance. We got a ticket upon entrance and than had to pay upon return using a machine located at the parking lot. The machine accepted credit cards, but was a royal pain  They had an attendant at the machine helping folks to manage the system. We had the feeling that Red Hook is still a place working out all the bugs (it takes the Port Authority years to get anything done) so anyone's guess how they handle payment these days. For each individual sailing, the ship can welcome 4,428 guests at double occupancy, or up to 5,642 passengers when fully booked.

Some Travel Is ‘Off the Charts' Expensive, Experts Say. Here Are 3 Ways to Cut Some Costs

Not only will cruise guests be eager to experience MSC Meraviglia from New York, but the ship will also bring a welcome economic impact to the area with the more than 200,000 domestic and international visitors expected to set sail each year. Because the ship has a roofed pool deck that can open or close depending on the weather conditions, she truly is a “ship of all seasons” that can offer guests great experiences no matter what the local weather. The 171,598-gross-ton ship will offer year-round sailings from New York through at least September 2024, with a variety of itineraries that vary seasonally.

Prices vary depending on the sailing, but available staterooms on an eight-day round-trip cruise to Florida and the Bahamas departing Aug. 13 start at $699 per person based on double occupancy, in addition to $160 in taxes and fees each, according to the line's website. Meraviglia launched in 2017 and can accommodate more than 5,700 passengers. The vessel also has 12 restaurants and 20 bars, along with six pools, a bowling alley, a spa and other amenities. The cruise line's MSC Meraviglia ship arrived at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal Thursday and set sail Saturday on a week-long round-trip cruise to Florida's Port Canaveral and the Bahamas. The event was attended by more than 3,000 guests including VIPs, key travel partners and global media as well as top management from the entire Cruise Division of the company and its parent MSC Group.

MSC Meraviglia offers great fun for the entire family -- and, indeed, you'll see plenty of families with little ones onboard, thanks largely due to the ship's fantastic children's facilities on Deck 18. These include the Doremi Club, the Doremi Lab, Junior and Mini Lego Clubs (complete with a full-size assortment of Lego figures situated on a bench outside the facility), a teen's club, and an adjacent sports complex. Plus, the ship's thrilling waterpark -- the Polar Aquapark -- is located just one deck above, meaning diversions for kids (and the young at heart) are never far from reach.

The ship's seven- and eight-night Caribbean itineraries will include a call at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, as well as Nassau. MSC Cruises is the world’s third largest cruise brand as well as the leader in Europe, South America, the Gulf region and Southern Africa, with more market share in addition to deployed capacity than any other player. It is also the fastest growing global cruise brand with a strong presence in the Caribbean, North America and the Far East markets. With this addition of New York City as an embarkation port, the line aims to attract even more North American guests as well as those from around the world. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry.

As part of an agreement, Carnival Corporation pays USD 12 cents per kilowatt-hour for shorepower. The US$21 million system was signed off by the New York and New Jersey Port Authority and turned over to the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), which currently oversees the cruise shipping program for Brooklyn and Manhattan. As of September 2016, NYCEDC has responsibility for the system's operations and maintenance.

The world's third-largest and fastest-growing cruise line, as MSC Cruises describes itself, sailed into New York City's Brooklyn Cruise Terminal this week with a glamorous megaship offering year-round excursions to select destinations. The news of the ship is exciting for many, but the terminal itself was the subject of controversy when migrants were first moved there as a temporary shelter. With this momentous arrival, New York City joins Miami and Port Canaveral as North American homeports for the rapidly growing cruise line. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville.

This is all part of MSC Cruises commitment to provide guests with the best vacation experiences at sea in a sustainable fashion. Last year, the cruise line added Port Canaveral as a permanent homeport with a mix of 3, 4 and 7-night cruises aimed at maximizing options for easy getaways just a short drive from the Orlando area’s world-renowned mix of attractions. Further south, MSC Cruises is building the largest and most advanced cruise terminal in North America at PortMiami, which will be able to accommodate three of the line’s largest ships simultaneously once complete. MSC Cruises is the fastest growing cruise line in the world, on the back of an ambitious new build plan that saw 7 highly innovative ships coming into service since 2017, including two in 2021 and two more arriving later this year. The MSC Meraviglia can hold up to 5,700 guests and offers 20 bars, 12 restaurants, and even a water park and ropes course to entertain passengers of all ages.
